Design Against Fur

'09 winner

see competition overview here
Competition registration by 26th March and deadline for submission 9th April

'Work will be evaluated by design and marketing experts, and potentially used in national and international campaigns to end the cruel fur trade. There are cash prizes and all winners and commended students will receive certificates for their portfolios. Winning work will be promoted on a range of national and international sites, in exhibitions and online galleries.

For the 2010 competition the focus is on the use of rabbits in the fur trade.  Each and every year tens of millions of rabbits are raised in cramped conditions and then brutally killed so their fur can be used to trim coats, jackets, boots, scarves and gloves. Their fur is also used to produce toys, stuffed animals, ornaments, trinkets, pet toys, blankets and other fashion and household textiles.'

Same categories, just more winners.

Same categories: Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography but we’ll have separate sections for professional and student work. One more way we’re going to share the inspiration.

The Prize

The Student Illustrator of the Year will receive £2,000 and a trophy. The runner up will receive £1,000.

Spectrum Fantastic Art

It's not a competition as such, but I still think this is of relevant interest.

"Fantasy creatures, heroes and heroines, space scenarios, elves and dragons—[Spectrum] is a must for fans of science fiction and fantasy and an indispensable reference work for art collectors, galleries, and advertising agencies."

ART SCENE INTERNATIONAL magazine

Spectrum is an annual art-book designed as a showcase for the best fantastical artwork produced in the preceding year. The book is divided into several categories, the one of which I think is of most interest to us is the Unpublished section. As it indicates, unlike all the other categories in the book, work entered here does not have to've been published; anything goes, including student work.

Despite not being an official competition, there are a lot more entries than get published in the book, so competition to get in is fierce. The deadline for this year (Spectrum 17) is 22nd of January, so there's still time to get something in!

The book itself is widely sold around the world, has one of the biggest circulations for any fantastic art-book, your contact details can go into the back, and copies are given to many major publishers and art directors, so exposure from getting into the book is huuuuuuge! Not to mention prestigious, especially if one wins an award.

There is a fee of around $10 per entry though. . .

Graphic Short Story Prize

Can't find any detailed info & dates as of yet. . . But I'll link to the official stuff I've found so far.

2009 winners thing; http://www.randomhouse.co.uk/graphicnovels/competition.htm

Despite the problems caused by the Royal Mail postal strike we ended up receiving an
absolutely record breaking number of entries this year. Quantity was without
a doubt matched by quality and the judges – Simone Lia (graphic artist), Dan Franklin
(Publisher, Jonathan Cape) Suzanne Dean (Creative Director, Random House) Paul Gravett
(COMICA) and Rachel Cooke (The Observer) - had an extremely hard task on their
hands picking just two winners. The increase from two to four pages of the Observer
Magazine allowed for the development of some fantastic narratives and ambitious artwork.

Among the many fantastic submissions the judges adored the beautiful drawings
and charming story of James Stewart’s “The Musing of Mow”. They were also intrigued
and impressed by Charlotte Nourse’s stunning “Road Project” and were haunted by Laurie J. Proud’s “Aubrey”. The talking cats of Jim Medway’s “Paul Crystal, Graphic Designer”
provoked much laughter and stole many hearts around the judging table and the
originality of William Goldsmith’s drawings for “Like a Wagon” impressed everyone.

But after much heated debate two winners were finally chosen.
The judges were unanimous in their appreciation of Joff Winterhart’s hilarious
and achingly realistic portrait of a mother and teenage son in
Days of the Bagnold Summer”. Joff was awarded the runner-up prize
and he will receive a stack of graphic novels and a check for £250.

The first prize went to the vividly captured and tender story “Paint
by Vivien McDermid, which they thought was a touching portrayal of mother
with a small toddler. Vivien will receive a cheque for £1000 at the ceremony
at the ICA at 2.30pm on Sunday 8th November.
